Challenging The 1%

In the wake of the George Floyd atrocity, most industries have carried out appraisals to determine levels of inclusion across their sector. Empirical evidence from comprehensive research, confirm woeful levels of diversity across most business verticals, especially acute at Board and Senior Management levels. A worrying and pervasive statistic is 1%. This figure typically represents BME Board Room representation across a number of industries including Construction, Architecture, Legal, Accountancy, Automotive and Advertising. Sadly, the levels of senior leadership have now fallen to less than 1%, with no BME c-suite representation in the FTSE100. In keeping with BBI’s ‘Active Diversity & Inclusion’ strategy, BBI plans to boost BME Senior Manager and Director levels, so they are statistically aligned with the size of the racial profiles making up the UK’s population. Our initial focus is the advertising sector. In support of Saatchi & Saatchi, The Black Business İnstitute is implementing ‘Pathways’ a series of structured initiatives, granting BME applicants with the opportunity to build a career in the coveted prestigious and creative advertising industry.
